Mexico will look for a broader agenda and to promote dialogue at COP16

Mexico City.- During a press conference, the Mexican Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Juan Manuel Gómez Robledo, assured that as the host of COP16, Mexico, will promote the dialogue among the different participants, Parallel activities aside from conferences will take place. These activities will allow the inclusion of different actors such as civil society, business community, legislators and social communication specialists in the discussions, with the sole purpose of creating an “agenda that goes beyond mere technical discussions”, said Gomez Robledo.

Executive Director of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Christiana Figueres, thanked and highlighted the efforts of the Mexican Government to restore the trust in the negotiation process. She added that “Governments have refrained their compromise and openness to work in an environment of mutual cooperation to achieve a broad and balanced package in Cancun”.

Fernando Tudela, Mexican Undersecretary of Environment and Natural Resources, also thanked Mexico's role as host. He said that this Pre-COP Ministerial Meeting has been one of the most productive ones, leading to a possible success at COP16: “We can achieve this decisive package of balanced and integral decisions, this is what we aspire in Cancun”. During the conference, it was highlighted that under Mexico´s leadership, any of the Parties have stepped back on the compromised goals and actions.
