Mexico’s key policy instrument results: Special Climate Change Program 2009-2012

“Our priorities in mitigation are basically two: energy efficiency and forests ecosystems,” said Fernando Tudela, Undersecretary of Environment of Mexico, during the presentation of the results of the Special Climate Change Program, (PECC in Spanish), at Mexican Pavillion, in the Cancunmesse venue.

The PECC involves federal government and “in terms of mitigation in the short run, has 86 goals,” which contribute to the global mitigation goal of almost 51 million tons of CO2e per year by 2012, explained Juan Mata Sandoval, Director General of the Climate Change Program.

In the energy sector, measures against climate change linked with the PECC are being taken. For example, the National Program for Sustainable Energy Use (PRONASI, in Spanish), is divided in seven areas: transport, illumination, home appliances, chlorine generation, building, industrial modeling, and the pumping of water” said Carlos Petersen, Mexican Undersecretary of Energy.

“Mexico is committed to reach a deforestation target in the short run,” which includes community and commercial forestry, conservation, sustainable and forest management, and deforestation, said Juan Manuel Torres Rojas, National Forestry Commissioner, who talked about the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries program, (REDD).
