Progress of the AWG-LCA and AWG-KP
President of the Conference hopes that agreements will be achieved
Chancellor Patricia Espinosa Cantellano, Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico and President of COP16/CMP6, convened an informal meeting prior to high-level meeting to inform the delegates about the progress delivered by the AWG-LCA and AWG-KP.
First came the report developed by AWG-LCA (Ad Hoc Working Group on Long Term Cooperation Action), headed by Margaret Mukahanana-Sangarwe, who stated that a positive progress has been made in negotiations, but it is not enough. "We must do better and we must do more," she said, and challenged delegates to conclude the issues that remain pending. She is confident that a document with tangible results will be presented.
John Ashe, Chairman of AWG-KP (Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol), said their report shows that key policy decisions need to move forward, and welcomed the assistance provided by Ambassador Espinosa Cantellano to continue working on technical and financial issues.
The President of COP16/CMP6 urged to reach a common agreement on steps to follow in order to reach compromises that are reflected in the paper at the end of the Conference. She encouraged delegates to find the balance needed to make Cancun a success.
