Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were last Saturday convicted by mobile courts for flouting environmental laws.

The residents were found guilty of violating the movement restriction order during last Saturday’s monthly sanitation exercise.

Spokesman of Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) Samuel Musa, disclosed yesterday that the residents were sentenced to two weeks imprisonments each or to pay between N1, 000 and N5, 000 depending on the nature of the offence.

According to him, ‘a breakdown shows that 22 were arrested in Nyanya, 20 at Lugbe and 26 in Kuje.

Others were 30 in Karu, 49 in the City Centre, and 30 at Gwagwalada’.

The spokesman vowed that anyone who violates the restriction order will be prosecuted in a mobile court,” He called on residents to collaborate with the board in its efforts to make the FCT clean and also rid it of environmental nuisances. At Kuje, Magistrate Bashir Alkali sentenced the offenders to three months imprisonment each or to pay N3000 as fines.

The magistrate however discharged one of the offenders on the ground that he was a minor, while another offender had an assault charge added to his offence for resisting arrest, which resulted into a fight with police officers.

The magistrate later warned the convicts against violating environmental sanitation laws in future, adding that the penalties would be stiffer if they appear for the same offence again. Kuje Council chairman, Mr Danladi Etsu Zhin, said the council has concluded arrangements to embark on a massive enlightenment campaign for residents to improve on their level of compliance to the monthly sanitation exercise.

He said a private contractor will be engaged to evacuate refuse in the council and the council will soon commence the issuance of refuse polythene bags to residents to ease the problems of evacuation.
