New book on climate change launchedPhilippines
Theres a new book on climate change. The 259-page volume, entitled Moving Forward: Southeast Asian Perspectives, on Climate Change and Biodiversity, is a co-publication of the Los Baños-based Southeast Asian nations in the fields of education, science, and culture. ISEAS, established in 1968, is dedicated to the study of socio-political, economic, and security trends and developments in Southeast Asia. The book on climate change was launched recently at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) in Makati City jointly by SEARCA, World Agroforestry Center, Biodiversity International, ASEAN Center for Biodiversity (ACB), and Siliman University.
Netherlands ambassador to the Philippines Robert Brinks served as keynote speaker of the event. Dr. Saguiguit said the book is the outcome of an international conference organized in 2008 by SEARCA and cooperating agencies. The conference culminated the five-year Biodiversity Research Program (BRP) implemented in Mindanao involving 14 academic and research institutions. The BRP and the conference were funded by the Netherlands government through its Ministry of Development Cooperation.
The book contains lessons learned from the BRP, as well as comparative perspectives and experiences in other countries, Dr. Saguiguit said. Quite importantly, it draws attention to what is suspected but not yet well investigated and established link between climate change and biodiversity loss of conservation. Dr. Sajise also cited the books timeliness and relevance, especially today which we need to know as much as we can about climate change and biodiversity, as well as their very dynamic relationships.
