Sokoto Flood Claims Two Lives, Destroys 200 HousesNigeria
At least two people have lost their lives as a result of flood disaster in Giyawa village of Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The flood also destroyed over 200 houses, farmlands and livestock worth several millions of naira in the area.
Member Representing Goronyo in the State House of Assembly, Alhaji Bello Muhammad, who confirmed the incident to newsmen in Sokoto yesterday, described the deaths as shocking and unfortunate.
He said the House committee on disaster management has been informed about the incident and all measures would be taken to alleviate the suffering of the displaced victims.
Muhammad called on the state and federal government to come to the aid of the victims, saying this is the worst flood incident recorded in the area in the last 10 years.
Commenting on the issue, Special Adviser, State Emergency Relief Agency, Hajiyu Kulu said the agency has taken inventory of the destruction caused by the flood in the area.
She stressed that efforts are being made to deliver relief materials to the village with a view to bringing succour to the victims.
She explained that the flood lead to the collapse of the bridge linking Giyawa village to the local government council while the villagers have been cut off as a result of the disaster.
Also speaking, Chairman of the council, Alhaji Zubairu Goronyo, who visited the scene of the disaster, described the incident as the will of Allah and prayed against future occurrence.
He disclosed that other villages affected by the flood include: Garbache, Kofargabas, Kofaryamma, and Sabongari.
He said the council has set up a committee to ascertain the level of damage caused by the flood with a view to assisting the affected flood victims.
