Govt plans oil spill awareness committeeNigeria
As part of efforts to check spills in oil-producing communities, the Federal Government has set in motion plans to inaugurate a committee on environmental sensitisation and awareness campaign in the Niger Delta region.
The inauguration slated for later in the month is being promoted by National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and came as high point of the recently held meeting of the Minister of Environment, Mr. John Odey, with captains of oil and gas industry in Nigeria recently in Abuja.
It was resolved that there was a need for NOSDRA, International Oil Companies (IOCs) and the media to form a committee that would develop strategies to raise the level of environmental awareness in the oil-producing areas.
A statement from the agency signed by Henshaw Ogbuike, head of Public Relations Unit noted that the inauguration of the committee was in line with a number of measures unfolded by NOSDRA to control oil spills in the region.
He added that NOSDRA was also the secretariat of the environmental clean-up and remediation sub Committee in the Niger Delta region.
“The committee will ensure the collaboration of stakeholders in strategising on modalities that will increase the level of environmental awareness among the oil producing communities, as well as promote dialogues and create enabling environment for harmonious relationships among the stakeholders,” he added.
