Flood Ravages Communities in SokotoNigeria

Thousands of houses and farmlands in 11 local government areas of Sokoto State have been ravaged by Floods. The affected local governments among the state's 23 included: Isa, Kebbe, Sokoto North, Sokoto South, Rabah, Binji, Goronyo, Silame, Shagari, Binji and Kware.
According to eye-witnesses, the disaster had led to the death of two youths aged 18 and 22 in Giyawa village of Goronyo. The youths allegedly died when lightning struck a tree where they were taking refuge after their houses was washed off by the flood.
Alhaji Zubairu Yari, the Chairman of Goronyo Local Government Area confirmed the incident to the media disclosing that Rabah local government where more than 2,000 houses and about 400 hectares of farmlands were washed away by the floods was the latest entrant into the list of flood-stricken local governments in the state.
The chairman of the area Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed said in Rabah yesterday that the affected towns included : Rabah, Rarah, Kuriya, ' Yar-tsakuwa , Gandi, Dawakawa, Tsamiya, and Miakujera, among others . "There was no loss of life here but houses, livestock, assorted food items and farm produce as household property worth millions of Naira had been lost in the disaster. "The 70-km Rabah- Bakura road which links Sokoto and Zamfara states have also been submerged by the flood," Mohammed said.
He appealed to the state and federal governments as well as wealthy individuals and organisations to come to the aid of the victims who have lost their means of livelihood.
Two victims, a 40-year-old Suleiman Shehu of Rabah town and 55-year-old Hamidu Dansaleh from Maikujera, called for an urgent assistance from the government.
"I have lost five cassava farms from which I was expecting to get about N500, 000. So we urgently need the support of the government," Hamidu lamented.
It would be recalled that more than 600 and 150 houses were recently destroyed by flood in various parts of Isa, and Sokoto north local government areas respectively.
Gov. Aliyu Wamakko visited Isa and Rabah local governments to have an on-the-spot assessment of the disaster after which he promised to assist the victims across the state.
