Climate change: Lagosians on ‘walk for nature’Nigeria
Towards the sustenance of a greener Lagos, the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) and the Lagos State government will tomorrow be leading Lagosians on an endurance trek, tagged ‘Walk for Nature 2010’. The walk, which will be led by the state governor, Babatunde Fashola, is one of the collaborative initiatives by the Lagos State government to engage the public, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and corporate bodies in the development of the environment through the greening projects as a means of mitigating the effects of climate change.
According to the state commissioner for the environment, Muiz Banire, the walk aims at sensitising the public on the importance of taking short distance walk as a form of exercise, a way of mitigating climate change effects and a support for the sustainability of a greener Lagos which is the theme for this year’s event. The less than 4,000 metres walk, Banire said, will start from the Lagos State House, Inner Marina via the NITEL tower and proceed to the Oando filling station, opposite Abibu Oki Street, Lagos Island and back to the State House through same route.
The commissioner urged the general public and corporate bodies taking part in the walk to arrive at the starting point by 7:00a.m for registration as the walk will commence by 8:00a.m. Programme of events for the walk released by the ministry include sensitisation lectures, presentation of essay prizes to winners and youth groups’ entertainment.
