British MP On Climate Change MissionNigeria
Abuja — A Liberal Democrat and member of the British Parliament, Ms Jo Swinson is in Nigeria to support advocacy for strong government response to climate change in Nigeria. Ms Swinson is lending support to the campaign to establish the National Climate Change Commission.
The British parliamentarian will spend her time in Nigeria building the capacity of members of the Nigeria Climate Action Network (Nigeriacan) in delivering effective parliamentary advocacy. The focus of her visit will be on promoting the Bill to Establish the National Climate Change Commission currently receiving legislative attention in the national assembly.
According to Ewah Eleri, Executive Director of International Center for Energy, Environment and Development and Coordinator of NigeriaCan, the Climate Bill has been passed by both Houses of the National Assembly. However, it has not been fully harmonised, and there is a real danger that this might not be done in time to seek presidential assent, thus the support of Ms Swinson in the effort of the National Assembly to establish an effective climate change commission cannot come at a better time. Climate change presents one of the greatest challenges of our time".
The British Parliament, Ms Swinson will visit Cross River State. She will also meet with the Minister of Environment, theBritish High Commissioner and members of the National Assembly.
